A personal testimony from Kay Hunn:

My family is from Dallas and I have always lived in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. Both of my grandfathers were Dallas businessmen; one building houses on the “M” streets and the other establishing one of the first shops on lower Greenville. The women in my family were strong and compassionate. My grandmother was the head surgical nurse at Gaston in Dallas when I was young and I admired her greatly. Teaching was my mother’s passion. I credit her with instilling my drive for philanthropy.

School was a happy place for me. I could not stand the idea of missing a day of school because I might miss out on something. In my younger childhood years, my free time was spent playing outside, hauling bottles in the wagon to the store for refund money, and playing hide-n-seek throughout the neighborhood at night. Later on, skating, bowling, and movies with friends became important. I developed a passionate love for science, nature, and 'how things work.' Summer weekends were family time at the lake or visiting my grandparents down the road. I took dance and baton lessons, was a Camp Fire Girl, made good grades but was not head of my class, and had a nice group of reliable friends.
My mother filled our life with moments of helping others. She would take me with her to take books to children with none at all, or groceries to a single mom, or one of many other simple but caring gestures. This had a great impact on me. I have always been highly empathetic so with each of these experiences I could not help but feel the pain and struggles of each person.

My mom used to tease me that I always liked to be in charge. I suppose that is true. As I look back, there was definitely a pattern, such as being the captain with the whistle for neighborhood parades. Tenacity has also been a consistent and strong trait of mine even if only to teach myself silly things like juggling and riding a unicycle. I simply would not give up until successful. This is also my approach to leadership at Northstar School.

We founded Northstar School for our own children with a group of other families determined to forge an empowering, challenging, and highly unique learning experience. We are proud of the incredible achievements of our graduates, and look forward to many future success stories from our children and yours.
